Young Professionals Spotlight: Janelle Lyons: International Student Advisor, University of Florida International Center

Written By: Staff

1. What do you like most about living in Gainesville?

Having easy access to nature! I lived in Gainesville previously as an undergraduate student and did not take advantage of the outdoors. Now I love cycling on the Gainesville-Hawthorne Trail, taking a walk on the La Chua Trail and spending time in Depot Park.

2. Tell us about your job or area of study.

I work as an international student advisor at the University of Florida International Center. I help ensure that UF students with an F1 visa, as well as academic departments that work with these students, understand immigration regulations. I also process paperwork that an F1 student needs in order to maintain their status.

3. What’s one of the best pieces of career advice you’ve ever received?

Someone once told me that the key to progressing in your career is to constantly look for ways to build on your experience as a working professional. It’s important to take advantage of professional development opportunities when they arise – and actively seek them out as well.

4. Outside of your job, what other activities are you involved in?

What do you do for fun in your free time?I started cycling about a year ago. With the strong cycling community here in Gainesville, it has been the perfect place to get started with this hobby. I also enjoy reading, spending time outdoors, watching films, doing yoga and traveling.

5. What do you like about ACEL?

I appreciate that there are a variety of ways to get involved with ACEL, depending on what you’re interested in and the amount of time you can devote to the organization. It’s also great getting to learn more about my community through ACEL, from meeting local candidates for office at a monthly happy hour, to volunteering at Grace Marketplace.
