What does it mean to be Fierce?

The word fierce encompasses so many areas relating to our mind, body and spirit. I picture the embodiment of a woman who is confident, beautiful and wise. To me, it means embracing who you are and showcasing strength, courage and determination in your actions. It means setting its – they are not punishments, rather respectful expressions of our needs and desires. When we fail to set healthy limits, we become tiny-hearted people. Being fierce means being powerful and having a heart full of humility and love!

What does success, achievement and accomplishment mean to you?

Success to me is personal growth in everything that I do, allowing for authentic expression. I also believe that success is a moving target and we never truly accomplish it. We may have many achievements and accomplishments along the way, but success is really a verb. We should constantly reevaluate and make adjustment. Achievements and accomplishments are to be celebrated along the way, but we should always strive for success.

What motivates you in the morning?

I love the feeling of a fresh start that every morning really is. I wake up because I am excited for what lies ahead and the possibilities that can unfold. It’s more of an internal motivator, an attitude maybe, that gets me going in the morning! I care to make every morning as strong as I possibly can. I know we always hear the saying, “time flies,” but do we really live like it? Life is short, and every day is a gift! It takes discipline on the days that you just have to dig in deeper, but you come out a stronger person each time you practice it!

What or who is inspiring you right now? Why?

I collect illustrations and quotes that inspire me. Reflecting on this collection has never failed to inspire me. It helps me from falling into a trap of seeing things from the perspective of the last person I talked to and allows me to focus in an inspired way. It’s funny how I can continually dip into my collection as the years pass and the quotes trigger further insights and inspiration.

What was the best decision you’ve made? What’s the worst?

This is a tough one! The best decision would have to be moving to United States. It’s definitely, by far, the decision that has shaped the trajectory of my life!

I never analyzed a decision that I categorized as the “worst” of my life. At times, I may make bad decisions, but I do not feel like looking back on them as bad since I have gained experienced.

What has been your biggest obstacle and how have you overcome it?

Obstacles provide us with a moment of clarity when the situation becomes so real that we are forced into change. I cannot single out one instance, but all I can say is that I am lucky that I didn’t get everything I wanted in my life and obstacles presented themselves. Otherwise, my current self would not exist. Learning disappointment in early ages has taught me how to be independent as an adult. Experiencing physical illness gives you appreciation for your health and gives you a renewed focus. Inside suffering from the obstacles that happen to you offer an opportunity to change your circumstances and grow as a person.

How do you address negativity in your life and in business?

I try to realize that everyone is fighting a battle I know nothing about. This perspective allows me to take a step back, reevaluate and refocus. Life is made up of many small moments and my reactions involved for each of those moments. Everyone struggles and having an attitude of gratitude helps when it comes to dealing with negativity in life or in business.

Is there a particular instance or occurrence that you credit for building your confidence and self-esteem?

I don’t think that I can credit a single occurrence for building my confidence and self-esteem. I do, however, can name a few key ingredients that help me with my confidence and self-esteem. I would have to say that exercise is a big one, I know it seems like it’s only a physical activity, but it goes so much deeper than that. When I feel strong and healthy, I feel confident! Sometimes shifting my focus helps to rebuild my self-esteem. Taking a few minutes off can help me to gain perspective. If that does not work, sometimes “faking” my confidence for the day can help me be stronger the next day. Preparation and self-improvement are also very important. Showing up unprepared in a situation is a sure way to wreak havoc on my self-esteem. Taking the time to focus and prepare is a great way to boost your confidence for any situation! Self-improvement is a constant activity that allows me to take the time and work on building my skills to make sure I feel confident.

How do you empower other women?

A quote that comes to mind after this question is, “Empowered women empower women.” One of the best ways I believe to empower others is to lead by example. I always try to offer a kind word, a hand to help out or send a note of encouragement depending on the situation. Good manners cost nothing. Little kindnesses can take you a long way and brighten someone else’s. It’s very important to make deposits in the emotional buckets of my team members at the office on a regular basis. It’s also important to keep working on yourself and constantly improving, while building up women around you. We also support local charities in different categories, such as health, education, family services and basic needs. There are many great women in those organizations that we invest in. A great quote I just saw the other morning read: “A woman acting alone is fierce. A group of women working together is a force.” There is so much truth in this and we are so much stronger together!

What change do you want to see in your industry?

Being in the financial industry, I want to bring simplicity and accountability to investing by working with professionals who strive to do the same. Like most industries that experience scandals and bad characters along the way, the financial industry requires some overhaul to rebuild the consumers’ trust. I would love to see the financial services industry have more transparency and for the general public be more educated.

Do you have any advice for young women as they try to achieve their goals?

Define what success means to you. Don’t accept others point of view or conventional wisdom. Picture yourself accomplishing your goals in 20 years and make sure your choices today are in service to those goals. Try to take out the angst and emotion and realize that everything takes time. Enjoy the journey along the way!

What do you want to be remembered for?

Being brave and authentic in my words and actions. I want people to remember me as the person who never stopped reaching, never stopped learning and never stopped growing. I aim to be the person who is filled with knowledge, strength, power and life. I hope to be remembered as someone who made great connections and elevated people to become the best version of themselves. This is a question that is a little nerve wracking since you think of your last days, but it is a great exercise to realize the value of your life’s moments.

How do you defy the current stereotypes, stigmas and double standards that women have today?

Like I mentioned before, being fierce means setting healthy limits that serve our needs and desires. I think limits help us to make conscious decisions to not allow stereotypes, stigmas or double standards keep us from pursuing our goals. At times, we must have the tough conversations or make courageous decisions not to give stereotypes power. We also have to realize that in life things go wrong, people act emotionally and not everyone has the best intentions at all times, but we can control one thing and that’s how we react to it.
