Book Review: Triggers: Creating Behavior That Lasts — Becoming the Person You Want to Be

Written By: Debbie Mason

“Triggers” reinforces the old adage, “If you want a different outcome, you have to do something different.”

When you are ready to analyze your behaviors and make substantive changes to DO something different, then “Triggers” is the right book to guide you through the journey of change. Written by the “No. 1 Thinker on Leadership,” Marshall Goldsmith and his decades of coaching CEOs and senior leaders on behavior change have produced yet another great book. “Triggers” provides the science behind observing what produces productive and unproductive responses (the triggers) in our behaviors and how to manage those more effectively.

Goldsmith coaches readers through steps to create awareness and then pause in order to make better choices. Those skills apply to the workplace and the home as well everyday life, whether in traffic or stressful conversations. In his “wheel of change,” Goldsmith takes readers through the steps required to eliminate, accept, preserve and create elements of choice to consciously reach for more effective outcomes in relationships in every realm of life.

The author shares a great deal of wisdom through his active and engaging “daily questions” and gives worksheet examples. Practicing what he teaches, Goldsmith shares his nightly calls with his own coach to report his progress on meeting his own objectives in each realm of his life.

This book combines a great mix of real-life examples, practical tools, science-based knowledge and coaching tips for readers to create a model for change. It’s among the best of books for creating change.
